Tulip Open Meet 2008
Thanks to Kath & Rosie Needham for the following report
24th Tulip Open Meet
The first weekend in May saw CABSC camping diehards (‘mad fools’ we were called by some) braving the usual threatened wet Bank Holiday weather forecast to take part in the 24th Tulip Open Meet in Spalding. This Open Meet coincides with the huge Spalding Flower Festival which was celebrating its 50th anniversary this year.
Fortunately for us the rain stayed elsewhere and the sun shone! We were joined this year by Tulip regulars and senior statesmen of the club, Paul Cross, Andy Burton, Colin Holmes and Stuart Crisp who were there for the camping experience, the ambiance and the beer! Our valiant team of only 28 swimmers competed fantastically, with many personal bests and a few meet records being recorded. Seb Smith claimed new records for 13 year old boys in 100m Fly, Back and Free and Katie Cockayne claimed a new record in the Open 50m free.
Unfortunately Mike went home feeling grotty after a couple of hours on Saturday and spent the rest of the weekend wrapped up in bed, which left us coach-less!. But thanks must go to the happy band of volunteer parents, and especially to Claire, who all rallied to cover warm-ups and help with team managing/vocal encouragement over the weekend. On Sunday afternoon there were about 7 TM’s on poolside at one point!
Besides the serious stuff in the pool, the weekend entertainment consisted of footie and cricket (and some forays over fences to collect well hit balls), sunbathing, watching Chris put Seb’s tent up, eating fish and chips, bowling, shopping, being woken by pigeons at 5am, Rosie and I watched a fine display of Morris Dancing in the town square and the odd BBQ – some even managed to watch the flower parade!. Rosie and I left around 7.30pm on Sunday, tired, in need of a shower and a cup of tea, but having thoroughly enjoyed the weekend. Many of our swimmers had new pb’s, trophies and medals, Rosie R and Seb came first in their age groups, we had claimed new meet records and CABSC ended up in 3rd place overall - which was a good result from such a small team! Well done and thanks to everyone for ‘pitching’ in (no pun intended)
Kath and Rosie

Olympic Trials 2008
Over the past week, Britains top swimmers have been competing in the British Championships/Olympic Trials for Beijing, held at Ponds Forge in Sheffield. Several CABSC swimmers swam in this event including, Jess Sylvester, Kathryn Wilde, Claire Abraham, James Crisp, Martin Cox, John Cook and Callum Lawson.
Jess and Kathryn were involved on the first day of the competition both competing in the 100m FC heats where both of them made it through to the final the following day. This put them both in with a chance of being selected for the 4x100m Fc relay at the Beijing Olympics. The top 4 swimmers in the A final would be selected, with Jess claiming the fourth spot after an incredibly tough race. Jess touched in a fantastic time of 56.12 with Kathryn close behind on 56.49 taking 5th place and so narrowly missing out on selection. With Jess having met the selection criteria by coming fourth she will now be included on the final list of swimmers to be nominated for this years olympics and looks well on her way to competing in her first olympics, which is an amazing achievement.
CASCB swimmer and two time para-olympian James Crisp was also competing on the first day in one of his strongest events, the 400m FC. James clocked the fastest time which was also within the qualifying time he needed to be selected for his 3rd olympics. James also went on to qualify in the 100m Back. Having undergone a shoulder operation last year, James has had to narrow his number of events down and so will be concentrate on these two, in which he has a great chance to come back with some more medals to add to his already huge tally.
With some amazing swims from swimmers all round the country this looks to be one of the strongest British teams for a long time to be heading to the olympics. We are extremely proud to have James and Jess included in such a fantastic team with some British swimming ledgends such as Mark foster (38!) who some CABSC swimmers had the pleasure of meeting at last years Tulip open meet.
